Infomaniak is a Swiss-based hosting provider with a leaning towards using open-source technologies, particularly OpenStack, for their hosting infrastructure. With multiple Tier III data centers in Switzerland, they can promise higher availability and redundancy than most providers, especially for cloud customers. All their products are versatile and flexible with configurable resources, particularly cloud hosting. However, individuals, small business owners, and enterprise clients can scale their traffic with unlimited bandwidth across the board.

Infomaniak is not your everyday web hosting provider. Instead of forcing you to pick from predefined packages, Infomaniak gives customers unlimited bandwidth and lets them customize storage and the number of websites they want.

Infomaniak takes convenience a step further by providing an incredibly easy to use custom hosting dashboard better suited to those not already familiar with cPanel.

Individuals and small businesses will have the freedom they need to pursue their ambitions with high resource caps. To top it off, Infomaniak provides free tools so that you can take full advantage of the unlimited bandwidth and launch an audio or video streaming platform.

Resources

Instead of offering a limited set of plans, Infomaniak gives customers the flexibility to set up their own solutions. All web hosting comes with unlimited data transfer, databases, and FTP accounts. You can then configure the amount of storage (between 100 to 500 GB) and the number of websites (between 20 and 100) you need.

While there is no option for unlimited storage like a few other hosts, the amounts are very high and suitable for nearly all users and use cases. Also, keep in mind that unlimited storage usually comes with strings attached, like a limited inode count, and isn’t usually SSD.

There is also no option to host unlimited websites, but most other hosts limit entry-level plans to 1 or 2 websites while Infomaniak kicks you off with 20.

Infomaniak claims that their hosting is optimized for WordPress. Regardless, they offer 80+ premium WordPress themes for free, as well as easy web app installation, newsletter marketing, and VOD/AOD tools. With unlimited traffic, you should have no problem hosting a video or audio streaming website.

Although you don’t get the industry-standard cPanel, Infomaniak has developed their own management dashboard with a much easier to use and modern interface. Sure, it’s not as feature-rich, but it still comes with the basics like SSH access, Cron jobs, vhost configuration, and a PHP version manager.

Something that’s pretty unique to Infomaniak is that they allow you to increase your available memory. This is great if you need to run resource-hungry scripts, and it’s starting to affect your stability and performance.

WorkSpace Webmail

For customers that need secure business email tools along with their web hosting, Infomaniak offers either separate webmail services or you can package it with your web hosting. Infomaniak’s webmail is powered by WorkSpace. You get unlimited email storage, 25 email addresses, and all the essential functions like calendars, contacts, etc. It only costs an extra €1.50 a month. While that’s not expensive, it’s something most other hosts package with their hosting for free.

Security and Performance

Infomaniak doesn’t mention much in the way of enhanced security. However, they do cover their bases with free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates as well as DDoS protection for web hosting customers. Both are critical today to allow your visitors to securely browse your website and to protect your site from being interrupted by automated attacks.

Customer Support

Web hosting customers can reach support via email and the phone every day of the year. However, support times are limited to mostly working hours for European timezones. The phone line is also Swiss and not toll-free, so it might be expensive. However, the documentation and FAQs are rich and informative for DIY solutions.

Price

With “only” 500 GB of storage and 20 websites, web hosting will set you back €5.75 a month (or around $6.30). That’s pretty cheap compared to the competition if you look at the resources you get. However, the most expensive configuration will cost you €29.75, which is relatively expensive, even with SSD storage and unlimited traffic.

For this price, we’d expect more proprietary software, unlimited storage, and unlimited websites at the very least. Still, the improved user experience and automatic daily backups are two awesome features that are hard to put a price tag on.

You can actually get a discount for additional web hosting subscriptions from Infomaniak. For example, you get 20% off both webs hosting accounts if you have between 2 and 4. Infomaniak also has a 30-day refund policy on your first order, so you can try out their hosting for 1-month risk-free. However, this is the industry standard.

Scalability and flexibility are the keywords when it comes to Infomaniak’s cloud offering. Infomaniak’s cloud services are based on the open-source OpenStack cloud technology, and they generally rely on cloud technologies across the board.

With four different cloud hosting types that are each highly scalable and configurable, customers will have no shortage of options to procure the perfect solution for them, no matter the skill level or requirements.

Even developers will find a versatile solution to launch their containerized apps thanks to Jelastic cloud hosting while enterprises and those with business-critical functions can rely on Very High Availability cloud hosting.

Server Configuration

Infomaniak’s cloud servers are highly scalable with resources that can be configured with up to 2 TB of SSD storage, 32 CPU cores, and 96 GB RAM. This places it firmly within the ranks of top-tier cloud hosting providers. Add unlimited traffic with any cloud hosting, and you’ve got one of the most complete offers around in terms of resources.

Infomaniak talks a lot about the quality of its infrastructure. However, with ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standard certification and a Tier III data center, they have every right to brag. And, a 99.99% SLA-backed uptime guarantee backs up all the promise they show.

On top of not forcing fixed resource amounts on you, resources are also completely dedicated to each customer – no sharing. The result will be much better availability and stability, which will benefit both you and your visitors.

Infomaniak’s cloud hosting is also optimized with WordPress and comes with $249 worth of premium WordPress templates. So, even though you’re going for a high-end, high-tech solution, you’ll still be able to easily build a website using a familiar platform. You also get the same one-click installer for a huge number of hosting apps. Infomaniak also provides tools to set up newsletter marketing or a VOD/AOD streaming platform. Most other hosts with such strong cloud offerings usually provide bare environments without these many tools to help users set up their ideal hosting projects.

A great feature from a security standpoint is the automated daily backup service. Backups are made to a different server to ensure redundancy and go back for seven days. This is something most other hosts charge extra for.

Managed vs. Unmanaged

Customers can pick between managed and unmanaged cloud hosting services. Managed servers are better for those who don’t want to deal with the technicalities of hosting a cloud-based solution while unmanaged is more appropriate for those that want full control of their server.

If you go with unmanaged, you’ll need solid knowledge in using command-line instructions to access and manage a Linux or BSD-based environment. Or, in the case of a Windows environment, how to use RDP to manage your machine.

The two packages are mostly the same at the same prices. However, you can set up a maximum of 100 separate environments and host a maximum of 400 websites with the managed package while there are no such limits with an unmanaged package.

Taking that into consideration, a managed package from Infomaniak could be a great way to run a web hosting agency without needing the talent to manage a cloud server from the ground up.

Whether you’ve signed up for managed or unmanaged support, you’ll still have access to the same support offered to all infomaniak clients. That means phone and email support 365 days a year, although it isn’t 24 hours.

Jelastic

Jelastic Cloud is a unique, turnkey, PaaS (Platform as a service) cloud hosting solution offered by Infomaniak. Jelastic is a versatile and convenient solution for those in the software development vertical. With just one click, you can deploy containerized application environments for CMSs like WordPress, Joomla, etc. or even Docker image containers.

It provides a platform where developers can skip the hassle of having to set up appropriate environments with the appropriate operating system and databases. Infomaniak completely takes care of the backend. Even setting up a high-availability solution across multiple servers and with a load balancer is made trivial with Jelastic. Jelastic provides incredibly easy to use tools to manage the development lifecycle so that devs can focus on their apps and not admin.

Jelastic will automatically scale the available memory and processors on demand to cope with any traffic spikes so that you don’t lose any business as a result of bottlenecks.

Jelastic is every bit as configurable as the other cloud products with adjustable web servers, RAM, CPU, and SSD storage. Prices start at a very low €1.84 per month, and you can add a dedicated IP for an extra €3 per month. To get to grips with it, they offer a 14-day risk-free trial before you commit.

Very High-Availability Cloud

Cloud platforms are inherently more secure and available because of their flexible architecture that makes it possible to move and swap environments whenever a failure occurs. In this case, Infomaniak provides even higher levels of availability by implementing its high-availability cloud infrastructure across at least six cloud-based located in several data centers, also safeguarding against physical disasters.

Databases are also clustered across servers with Galera technology to ensure redundancy. Infomaniak uses both clustered environments as well as dual-load balancers to ensure stable access to your servers, no matter what happens – even if a critical failure occurs at one end. Customers at this end of the spectrum need bespoke solutions to their needs. So, Infomaniak will go out of their way to set up the custom solution you need with a custom SLA (with up to 100% uptime) to hold them to their end of the deal.

As you might expect, very high-availability cloud hosting is significantly more expensive, starting at €699. However, it’s aimed at an exclusively small set of potential customers, mostly those with global reach and enterprise-scale hosting needs, like large multinationals. There are also high one-time setup fees (from €4000) to consider while further pricing is based on the number of load balancers, web servers, MySQL servers, and other maintenance fees.

Price

Infomaniak’s cloud hosting starts at a very affordable €29 per month, considering what you get. What makes the pricing especially attractive is the fact that you can scale individual resources so that you only pay for exactly what you need. Surprisingly managed and unmanaged packages cost the same while most hosts charge extra for the former.

Even the most expensive configuration costs around €591 (plus 50c per additional IP address), which is reasonable for premium cloud hosting with huge amounts of resources. You can further fine-tune the pricing for managed hosting based on the number of environments and websites you want to host.

Another plus for flexibility is that you can choose between monthly, quarterly, or annual subscriptions without any additional costs. Prices aren’t discounted for longer-term hosting, but that just contributes to the overall transparency.

Infomaniak Server Performance

To test Infomaniak hosting performance we used a few Pingdom reports. Over the span of a year, Pingdom’s probes (located across North America) performed daily checks, on a basic website (less than 100KBs) hosted on Infomaniak’s shared server environment. Additionally, there was no throttling added to these checks, so slower response times can be expected for 3G or 4G connections.

Yearly Server Performance:

  • Average Uptime

    100.00%

  • Average Response Time

    0.00ms

  • Monthly Downtime

    No Downtime

Data shown as monthly Uptime averages for a basic Godaady website

Server performance can affect all aspects of your site. Case studies have consistently found that customer wait times (page load and response times) directly affect everything from SEM, revenue, and traffic growth. By a lot too, here’s just one example:

For Mobify, every 100ms decrease in homepage load speed worked out to a 1.11% increase in session-based conversion, yielding an average annual revenue increase of nearly $380,000.

Security

In terms of security, there’s not too much to talk about when it comes to Infomaniak. It’s worth noting that much of their infrastructure is built on open-source technologies like Openstack. While it’s nothing to be actively concerned about, there is always the risk of more widespread exploitation using open-source platforms.

While cloud hosting might not be inherently secure, your data is safer since thanks to clustered and geographically diverse servers and databases. Cloud servers are also more fault-tolerant, which means you’ll probably have better availability and faceless downtime.

DDoS Protection

DDoS Protection is critical to staving off the most common types of attacks online. Infomaniak’s DDoS mitigation solution is spread across four continents and able to absorb attacks of up to 4.5TB/s. This massive potential allows it to keep client sites functioning normally, even during attacks.

SSL Certificates

Infomaniak provides a stock-standard Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate along with every web hosting account for free. However, you can upgrade this to a standard DV or Business EV certificate. The former comes with $10,000 insurance against loss and the latter with $1,750,000 insurance as well as giving you a unique certificate with your company details.

Customer Support Review

Infomaniak’s support might be operational all days of the week and year, but, unfortunately, they aren’t available 24/7. Both email and phone support hours are limited to 6 AM – 9 PM for email and 6 AM – 5:50 PM for phone. This is a letdown since most hosts offer at least one channel around the clock, and sometimes more. Live chat is also only for sales questions and also goes through times when no support reps are available.

The phone line is also not toll-free, and it’s a Swiss number, meaning international callers might struggle to get through or face higher charges. In general, non-European customers won’t have an ideal time when it comes to support.

However, Infomaniak does maintain an incredibly informative and extensive knowledge base as well as 1000s of FAQ pages. That’s a lot of resources for you to try and solve common issues by yourself.

Infomaniak also gives live server status updates so that you know whether any issues you experience are local to your server or are due to a problem Infomaniak is facing.
